The Rutt Is On!—-

Oct 31 2008

Went out this morning before work and the bucks are going CRAZY!  I had several deer grunting and snort wheezing around me before light.  At about 7:45 6 point chased a doe past me and at about 8:00 this guy came in grunting and looking for a doe.  I have to admit I thought he had 8 points, but I did not have time to be picky.  I drew back and took a shot at him moving at about 20 yards.  The shot hit a little back because he was moving, but it still was a double lung pass through (GOD I LOVE THE RAGE BROAD HEAD).  He went about 40 yards.

And of course we have Madison’s first deer pic!

10/26 Update…

Oct 26 2008

Shawn and I have been hitting the stands each weekend.  This weekend I had a few small bucks cruising along and fighting and last week I passed on a decent 7 pointer.  Below is a update from Shawn from this Weekend:

Do It Yourself (DIY) taxidermy is much cheaper. All said and done this euro of the bow kill buck 2008 costs me $40.00 and about 25 hours of work. Turned out nice.

Speaking of taxidermy bills, almost had a shot opportunity at a massive mature buck this Saturday. I don’t know exactly how big or points and as they say they always look bigger running away from you. All I know was that I am holding out for a huge deer after the early season bucks. This buck was for sure HUGE!

Details-I heard a deer sloshing through a creek bottom. He had already gone passed me through some very thick underbrush. I caught a glimpse of his body and horns. I wanted a better look at him so at about 60 yards I grunted a couple times at him. He didn’t even pay attention to me and I found that odd. So a couple of more grunts later and he kept going. I decided to turn around and scan the area that’s when I noticed this huge buck 35 yards behind me in a clear shooting lane looking up the tree at me. At that time he turned and ran then jumped in and swam the creek and sloshed through the flooded creek bottom. Gone but not forgotten I can only hope that when the rut cranks in he returns. This deer escaped only due to another buck in front of him and an assumption on my part that bucks would be all by themselves this time of year.

Bucks are Moving…

Oct 12 2008

Shawn and I headed out to a little spot we have in Camden County.  The deer seemed to be moving all morning from before light to 10am.  Small bucks seem to be starting to wander around as well.  In total shawn saw 16 deer and a few turkies and I saw 11 deer.  One of the 11 was a nice 3×4.  I let him walk with hopes that the hunting gods will reward me with deer simalr to Shawn’s!

Shawn Scores…

Oct 10 2008

Shawn took this nice eight by my place yesterday evening…

Whack a nice 4×4 today. He might score 120″. He came a cross a field with a smaller buck and about 6 does and yearlings. Gave me a 20 yard broadside shot and I took it with rage 2 blade broadhead passing through both lungs and heart. I watched him fall about 50 yards out and now I am officially only going to shoot if its a true monster.

10/5 – Update

Oct 05 2008

Well…  Went out this weekend and it seems to be picking up a bit.  Saturday I saw 10 does and 3 bucks one of which is the largest buck I have ever seen on stand!  I am thinking he is 8 or better, but he stayed out at 100 yards and I was not able to get a clear look at his brow tines.  The other 2 where a spike and six point.

Shawn went out as well and saw a nice six and a shootere 8 point.  We both are kind of looking for a trophie this year and Shawn passed on the 8.  Not an easy decision but hopefully it will pay off later in the season.  Shawn also did some research on the rut.  See below:

Moon Phase

looks like the deer rut according to the moon might be a little off this year. I follow the moon phases but base more of my decision on weather (cold fronts, temp, pressure and precip). According to the 2008 moon phases and the link below we should have a last quarter moon going into a new moon from either Oct. 25th-Nov. 2nd (EARLY) or Nov.23-Dec.1 (LATE). This typically means that this starts the rut with the young bucks chasing and does not ready and then big boys going to breed in 7-14 days after these dates. To make any sense of all this we will probably see some chasing going on early this year with young bucks the last week of Oct. and then breeding taking place with mature bucks and little action for hunters around Nov. 9th to the 16th. This is about 2 weeks earlier than last year and is the earliest that we could see this in over 20 years. Of course as stated earlier I base more of my decision on weather!!!

October Update

Oct 03 2008

It has been pretty quiet so far this season.  Shawn and I have seen does and a few small bucks, but no shooters yet.  This cold front is a welcome change to the weather and hopefully things will begin picking up.  I got a few new pics from the trail cam and posted them.  Below is one of those pics:
